A child doesn't grow on nutrition alone. Their holistic development is shaped by the full ecosystem around them - food, health, sanitation, stimulation, emotional security, play and responsive caregiving. While nutrition matters. So does communicating with them. So does a hug. So do neighbourhood Anganwadi, engaged caregivers and everyday opportunities to build language, confidence, curiosity and cognition. A birth cohort study in Vellore shows that children who attended preschool regularly for 18–24 months, including in Anganwadi centres, scored seven IQ units higher on cognitive tests than those who did not. This is the "seven-point IQ opportunity" that Beena Koshy (Senior Professor, Developmental Paediatrics, CMC Vellore) and Riday Chokshi (Senior Associate – National Initiatives and Policy, Rocket Learning) write about in The Hindu. It points directly to what frameworks like Aadharshila, Navchetana, and Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi are trying to build: Anganwadis as spaces that nourish both body and mind through play-based learning, storytelling, peer interaction and caregiver engagement.
