Today, we share Vanessa’s journey — a story of resilience and courage. After a devastating car accident, Vanessa faced a long recovery complicated by a persistent infection that wouldn’t go away. Despite repeated treatments, the antibiotics stopped working. The bacteria had adapted. What she was experiencing had a name — antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Living with a resistant infection meant years of uncertainty, multiple surgeries, and constant fear of what might happen next. With determination and support from medical teams across continents, Vanessa eventually overcame the infection. Today, she uses her experience to raise awareness about responsible antibiotic use and the importance of early, accurate diagnosis. At Roche, our commitment is clear: addressing AMR requires both continued scientific innovation and learning from patients’ lived experiences. Stories like Vanessa’s remind us that behind every global health challenge are people whose lives depend on progress.
