🎓 Alumni Spotlight: Dr Anirban Changdar, PhD (RMIT School of Engineering, Class of 2025) Dr Anirban Changdar’s PhD journey in the RMIT-AcSIR Joint Research Program took him across countries, cultures, and advanced research environments, shaping him into a global researcher 🌍. His doctoral research focused on laser forming of aluminium foam and aluminium foam sandwich structures, exploring how lightweight cellular metals can be shaped using laser technology while preserving their intricate internal architecture. The work brought together laser processing, metal forming, additive manufacturing, cellular materials, and computational modelling into one highly interdisciplinary study. At RMIT University, he accessed world-class facilities including the Advanced Manufacturing Precinct (AMP), the RMIT Centre for Additive Manufacturing (RCAM), and the RMIT Microscopy and Microanalysis Facility (RMMF), where advanced manufacturing, imaging, and analysis capabilities enabled his research to move from concept to real experimental validation 🔬. ✅ AMP - https://lnkd.in/dZUtaysM ✅ RCAM - https://lnkd.in/gm_bbxSF ✅ RMMF - https://lnkd.in/gXgF58qB His research led to multiple high impact publications in areas including laser processing of metal foams, aluminium foam forming, composite structures, hybrid manufacturing, and thermomechanical modelling 📊. A key strength of his PhD journey was the joint supervision model. At CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), Dr Shitanshu Chakraborty and Dr Samik Dutta provided strong engineering foundations and guided his early research development. At RMIT, Distinguished Professor Cuie Wen and Associate Professor Yuncang Li encouraged him to think more broadly, question established ideas, and engage confidently with the global research community. Beyond research, his time in Australia was deeply enriching. He celebrated Durga Puja with the Bengali community in Melbourne and travelled across Victoria and Western Australia, adding cultural depth and balance to his PhD journey. Dr Changdar is now a Research Assistant at RMIT, focusing on biodegradable zinc based scaffolds for biomedical applications, extending his research from aluminium foams into biomedical materials. His message to future students is simple. Embrace the journey, stay resilient, and make the most of the global opportunities the program offers.
