Power and cooling are often cited as the primary constraints. In practice, the limitation emerges from how systems are wired and operated. Today’s data center infrastructure relies on: ✔️ Dense cabling that fixes topology at deployment. ✔️ Bandwidth distribution tied to physical layout. ✔️ Reconfiguration processes that require manual intervention. ✔️ Operational workflows that cannot keep pace with workload changes. Compute scales predictably. Workloads don’t stay static. As systems run, communication patterns shift, traffic redistributes, and the optimal paths through the network change with it. The physical layer, however, remains fixed. ⛓️💥 This creates a persistent mismatch: bandwidth is available, but not where it’s needed. Some paths become congested while others are underutilized, and system efficiency gradually declines. Nothing actually breaks; the system just can’t adjust fast enough to keep up with its own workload. The limitation isn’t capacity anymore, it’s how slowly connectivity can adapt in real time. 👉 What’s needed is infrastructure that can programmatically reshape its topology, without manual reconfiguration.
