I think we’re giving the wrong career advice to students and young professionals. Everywhere you look, people are saying: “Follow your passion.” But what if you don’t know your passion yet? What if you’re 22, 25, or even 30 and still figuring things out? The reality is that most people don’t wake up one day and suddenly discover their passion. They discover it through exposure. By trying things. By failing at things. By doing work they initially had no interest in. I didn’t learn what interested me by sitting and thinking about it. I learned by exploring. One skill led to another. One opportunity introduced me to a new field. One conversation changed my perspective. And slowly, things started making sense. That’s why I believe a better piece of advice is: Don’t obsess over finding your passion. Focus on increasing your exposure. Read more. Meet different people. Learn different skills. Take on projects. Try things that make you uncomfortable. Because clarity rarely comes from thinking. It comes from doing. And sometimes the path that changes your life is the one you never planned to take.
