‘Together, we aim to answer the question: how can one of the world’s most celebrated landscapes remain a place where both wildlife and people can thrive?’ Today Yuhong Li and Michael Kimaro (Faculty of Science and Engineering - University of Groningen) are defending their PhD theses at the our university. Their research contributes to a deeper understanding of human-wildlife coexistence in East-Africa’s savanna ecosystems. Yuhong focused on how livestock and wildlife can coexist, while Michael studied the effectiveness of a fence that protects crops from elephants. Together, their findings provide important insights for balancing biodiversity conservation and local livelihoods. This research was supported by the Ubbo Emmius Fonds and conducted within the CoCoST programme, highlighting the value of long-term collaboration between researchers, local communities, and conservation partners.
