IN PURSUIT OF CLEANLINESS 176 / Research by the Fraunhofer IPA on cleanroom particle migration / ... The Fraunhofer IPA conducted research for the microelectronics industry on how sub-micron sized particles enter manufacturing cells. During the investigation, it was discovered that manufacturing residues from safety shoe soles, as well as polymer fragments originating from wear during walking, are the primary sources of manufacturing defects. The report notes that traditional, passive airlocking is incapable of managing this "molecular-level" contamination. Based on the expert analysis, introducing automated airlock systems not only ensures the successful completion of quality assurance audits (GMP) but also reduces operational risks resulting from human error to a minimum. This technological step also significantly improves the return on investment (ROI) for cleanroom projects.
