“You have power over your mind—not outside events” Marcus Aurelius ✍🏼 When I read that Spain’s national football coach, Luis de la Fuente, draws inspiration from Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations, it reminded me that great leadership principles don’t age. Whether you’re leading a national team or a sales organisation, the challenges are surprisingly similar: uncertainty, pressure, setbacks, expectations and, above all, people. After reflecting on Marcus Aurelius’ philosophy, these are the 10 Stoic principles I believe every sales leader in the medical devices industry should embrace: 1️⃣ Control what you can control. Markets fluctuate. Competitors react. Tenders are unpredictable. Your preparation, attitude and execution are always within your control. 2️⃣ Build the team before building the numbers. High-performing organisations are created by developing people, not by chasing quarterly targets alone. 3️⃣ Stay calm when pressure is highest. The leader’s mindset often becomes the team’s mindset. 4️⃣ Turn obstacles into opportunities. A lost account can become a stronger relationship. A failed evaluation can become valuable feedback. Growth starts where comfort ends. 5️⃣ Lead through actions, not titles. Your team watches what you do far more closely than what you say. 6️⃣ Don’t become addicted to success—or discouraged by failure. Celebrate victories with humility. Learn from defeats with curiosity. 7️⃣ Never stop learning. The best sales professionals are students first. Markets evolve. Technologies evolve. We should too. 8️⃣ Be fully present. Every customer meeting deserves your complete attention. Great relationships are built one conversation at a time. 9️⃣ Protect your integrity. In medical devices, credibility is one of the few competitive advantages that cannot be copied. 🔟 Measure success by the people you develop. The greatest achievement of any leader isn’t being the top performer—it’s helping others become one. Technology will continue to evolve. Products will continue to improve. Competition will always exist. But character, integrity and leadership never go out of style 📚
