This selection was a cut-throat reset. No Suryakumar Yadav, limited roles for Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel, and Jasprit Bumrah being looked upon primarily for ODIs – it is a telling comment on how India’s T20 cricket is likely to shape up over the next two years. Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma will now help fashion a new-look Indian team which, it is hoped, will lead the country in its title defence in 2028 in Australia and New Zealand, as well as in the quest for gold at the LA28 Olympics. The decision to appoint Shreyas captain for the twin tours of Ireland and England, along with the Asian Games in Japan, has also quashed any conjecture that personal likes and dislikes could influence India’s captaincy selection. As I had written before, whether Gautam Gambhir likes Shreyas or not was never a consideration. What mattered was how they could together build a champion Indian team.
