Most RevOps teams are solving the wrong problems. Not because they lack skill. Because they're not listening to the music the exec team is playing. That's the framework Gabriel Rustice (VP of RevOps at Seedtag) brought to this week's episode of RevOpsAF. It's one of the more useful mental models we've heard for thinking about career growth in this function. A few things that stuck with us: 🎵 Listen to the music first. Every company has priorities the exec team is locked in on. If your work isn't aligned to those priorities, it doesn't matter how well you execute it. It won't land. 💰 Translate impact into dollars. Gabriel showed up to a COO with a 20-slide deck. Got stopped at slide 4. The COO didn't need the deck, he needed problem, impact, and cost to fix. That's the whole story. 🎯 Fundamentals before tooling. ICP, segmentation, data architecture, sales process. Get those right before you automate anything that depends on them. AI makes the outputs faster. It doesn't fix a broken foundation. 🧠 The combination is what makes you invaluable. Business strategy fluency + technical depth. Most operators have one. The ones who develop both are genuinely hard to replace. And then there's the question Gabriel closes with (one worth sitting with): Do you actually want to lead? Not the title. Not the authority. The real version: serving your team, fighting unglamorous battles, being the last to get credit. If the answer is yes, the path is clear: humble yourself, learn the business, find the problems that matter, and make them your own. If the answer is no? That's okay too. Matthew Volm had something to say about that: give yourself permission to change your mind. Life's too short to chase someone else's definition of success.
