"Long before I embraced Islam, I had a dream that lived quietly in my heart a longing to visit the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. I didn’t even know at the time that these sacred places were only open to Muslims. I just knew there was something magnetic about them, something beyond explanation. I wanted to understand what touched the hearts of millions so deeply what inspired people, generation after generation, to leave everything behind and walk the path of pilgrimage. I had heard stories from friends whose parents had gone to Hajj how their houses were painted white when they returned, a symbol of purification and honor. Hajj… one of the five pillars of Islam. I was intrigued, not just by the journey itself, but by what could possibly anchor people so deeply to faith that they would cross the world to complete it. The seed of Islam was planted in my heart much earlier than I realized when I was just 20 years old, walking the streets of New York City with my best friend. We were stranded and overwhelmed, unsure what to do until a group of Muslim brothers came to help us. They had nothing to gain, and everything to give. We asked them why. Their response stayed with me forever: “We are Muslims. Islam teaches us to help. It’s a blessing for us, sent by Allah.” That moment left a mark. Quiet but lasting. And then, years later, I discovered something that hit even closer to home the Islamic history of Al-Andalus, the very soil my ancestors walked. My mother is from a village near Granada. The history, the architecture, the poetry it awakened a part of me I had forgotten was searching. From there, the spiral began not downward, but inward. Toward truth. Toward peace. And then came the moment that changed my life forever. On December 8th, 2023, in the city of Jeddah, I said my shahada.
