On our way back from the #EUnetCCC on-site workshop on Shared Decision-Making, hosted by our wonderful colleagues Manal Iraki and Eva Sandberg at Lillebælt Hospital in Vejle, Denmark. With this workshop, we brought together partners from the thematic activity on patient-centeredness within WP6 of the EUnetCCC - European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres project. Together, we exchanged knowledge and practical experiences on how Shared Decision-Making can be implemented in cancer care. We also had the privilege of hearing several inspiring contributions: Thank you to Torben Hansen for demonstrating what Shared Decision-Making looks like when it is truly lived in clinical practice; to Karina Olling for sharing her research findings and practical decision aids for patients; to Sarah Auener for broadening our perspective on how the Danish Cancer Society involves patients, and to Mona Muusmann Petersen for sharing her personal story as a cancer patient and reflecting on what Shared Decision-Making meant to her along her individual journey. Besides these inspiring talks, we discussed benefits and barriers to shared decision-making; learning - based on evidence and shared practical experiences - that common concerns like “that takes too much time and increases costs” does not hold up in practice. Also, we discussed how our patient-centeredness working group could support Comprehensive Cancer Centres and Comprehensive Cancer Care Networks on their journey to implementing shared-decision making. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this insightful workshop. We are leaving Vejle with many valuable impressions, an amazing team spirit, and many ideas in our backpacks.
