💡 New insights on cardiac biomarkers in renal failure High-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) is a cornerstone for diagnosing myocardial injury, but false elevations from non-cardiac causes remain a challenge. 📊 This study from Androniki Papachristou, Christian Puelacher, Tobias Breidthardt, Christian Müller and colleagues at Universitätsspital Basel (USB) used renal transplantation as an in vivo model to examine the effect of renal clearance on hs-cTnT. 🔍 Findings from 45 patients: hs-cTnT levels dropped by ~36% within 24 hours after transplantation, paralleling improved renal function. This suggests that terminal renal failure itself contributes substantially (about one-third) to hs-cTnT elevations, while the remainder reflects chronic cardiomyocyte injury. 📌 Take-home message: Interpreting hs-cTnT in patients with ESRD requires careful consideration of renal function. 👏 Congratulations to the CRIB/USB team and collaborators for providing valuable evidence to refine the interpretation of cardiac biomarkers in nephrology and cardiology! #ResearchGIM #Cardiology #Nephrology #RenalFailure #Transplantation #Troponin #Biomarkers #EvidenceBasedMedicine https://lnkd.in/ewVpfhUv
