A new study co-led by UHN sheds light on why some individuals with a high genetic risk for schizophrenia develop the condition while others do not. Researchers led by Dr. Anne Bassett, Dr. Ryan Yuen, and Muyang Cheng focused on people with a deletion in a genome region called 22q11.2β€”one of the strongest known genetic risk factors for schizophrenia. They found that rare DNA expansions may act as additional modifiers of risk. These findings offer new insight into disease biology and highlight the potential of genome sequencing for earlier diagnosis and more targeted care in complex conditions. This study was co-led by researchers from University Health Network, The Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto and CAMH First author: Muyang Cheng Corresponding authors: Dr. Anne Bassett and Dr. Ryan Yuen #SchizophreniaResearch #GeneticRisk #EarlyDiagnosis
