Grids built for predictable demand are now absorbing record volumes of variable renewable generation. In Germany alone, negative electricity prices occurred 457 hours in 2024 - up from 301 the year before. This pattern is appearing across markets. The challenge is no longer how much renewable capacity gets built. It's how well generation, storage and control systems work together once it is. Battery storage is taking on a more central role in Germany - stabilising frequency, managing peak loads and helping grids absorb more renewable output without compromising reliability.
