“I've always had a love for taking care of children, but in school I felt there was a lot of emphasis on going to college and university, and I didn't feel either of those options were right for me,” says Caitlin Galbraith, one of our modern apprentices. “When I saw early years' apprenticeships being advertised with the council I was immediately interested. For me, caring for and nurturing young children comes naturally. I knew I'd be able to bring some positive energy, and that it would be a really fulfilling role,” adds Caitlin. “I'm delighted to say I was right about the sense of fulfilment I would get from working with young children. It's really special getting to know them and watching them grow. I love listening to their stories and hearing what they've been up to. And I take a lot of pride in understanding them and supporting their learning.” Caitlin is one of our youngest modern apprentices to progress into our employment. She achieved her HND qualification in childcare last year at the age of 19 and now works at Lochfield Early Learning and Childcare Centre in Paisley. She says the opportunity has given her valuable experience and she would recommend an apprenticeship to other young people looking for a future career. “I'm thrilled to be working at Lochfield ELCC and so grateful for the apprenticeship opportunity that led me here. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough!,” explains Caitlin. “The valuable experience you gain is second to none. There is so much hands-on learning, and you get the benefit from working with experienced people in different early learning centres. The more you learn, the more rewarding it is because you get to work independently and see what it's really like to do the job.  “I can see myself working at the council for a long time and maybe even running my own nursery someday.” There are lots of modern apprenticeships available with us, including business and administration, construction trades (like joinery, plumbing and electrical), early years, horticulture, youth services, housing and regulatory services.
