Are we designing places to visit, or places to belong? For decades, tourism developments have been measured by the number of beds, attractions, restaurants and visitor numbers they create. I believe the next generation of destinations will be measured by something entirely different. The quality of the spaces between them. Sociologist Ray Oldenburg introduced the concept of the Third Place - spaces beyond home and work where communities gather, relationships form and social capital grows. I believe this idea can evolve further. At ARC of Franschhoek, we’re exploring what Third Spaces look like in a regenerative landscape. A trail is no longer simply infrastructure for recreation. It becomes a corridor for conversation, health and discovery. The edge of a dam is not simply a scenic viewpoint. It becomes a place for reflection, mindfulness and environmental awareness. A bench beneath a tree is not an item of street furniture. It is an invitation to pause. A sunset boma is more than an event venue. It becomes a modern campfire - a place where stories are shared, friendships are formed and communities reconnect. This is the philosophy behind Architecture • Regeneration • Community (ARC). We believe regenerative tourism is not simply about protecting ecosystems. It is about designing places where nature regenerates, communities flourish, and people rediscover their relationship with both. As cities become denser and our lives increasingly digital, the need for meaningful Third Spaces has never been greater. Perhaps the greatest opportunity for tourism, landscape architecture and community development is not building more destinations… …but creating more places where people genuinely feel they belong.
