I’m going to brag for a moment—my little sister just matched into surgery at Wesley at the University of Kansas, the number one teaching hospital in the country! Watching her grow up, it was always clear she was destined for something extraordinary. While the rest of us were reading storybooks, she was flipping through medical dictionaries for fun. She went on to graduate from the University of Iowa with highest distinction, with university honors, and with honors in biomedical sciences. And somehow, she’s still the only person who can consistently beat me at memory games. But what makes this even more remarkable is the bigger picture: only about 6–7% of surgeons in the United States are DOs, and only about 22% are women. When you combine those numbers, women DO surgeons make up roughly just 1–1.5% of surgeons nationwide. So while her brilliance and work ethic make this moment feel inevitable, that doesn’t make it any less extraordinary. I am endlessly proud to be her big sister. Watching her chase this dream for years—and now seeing her step into it—is something I’ll never take for granted. The future of medicine is brighter because of you. https://lnkd.in/gjmKFRHE
