I recently had the privilege of completing a four-week Clinical Cardiology elective at The Mount Sinai Hospital, ranked among the world’s leading heart hospitals, under the leadership of George Dangas, MD, MACC, MSCAI. As a sub-intern across the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and general cardiology ward, my days began with pre-rounding on three to four patients daily, reviewing overnight events, synthesizing investigations and hemodynamic data, and presenting management plans during multidisciplinary ward rounds. One of the most inspiring aspects of the rotation was caring for patients supported by advanced mechanical circulatory support devices, including Impella, IABP, VA-ECMO, and LVAD therapy, which provided invaluable insight into the management of advanced heart failure and cardiogenic shock. I also had the opportunity to spend time in the catheterization laboratory, observing complex coronary and structural interventions and learning from experts in a field I hope to pursue in the future. Alongside my clinical responsibilities, I delivered a formal presentation on the landmark evidence surrounding beta-blocker therapy following myocardial infarction, and attended daily educational conferences, grand rounds, ECG sessions, and journal clubs. Perhaps the greatest privilege of all was sharing a space and learning from individuals whose work has shaped modern cardiovascular medicine, including Dr. Valentin Fuster, Dr. Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, MBA, Dr. Samin K. Sharma, and Dr. Roxana Mehran. A special thank you to those who made this experience so memorable. Dr Umesh Gidwani for exemplifying a level of leadership and clinical excellence in the most challenging environments that I hope to emulate throughout my career, Dr. Rony Shimony for reinforcing that being a good physician begins with being a good human being, Dr. Stamatios Lerakis for his guidance and opportunities for collaboration throughout my time at Mount Sinai, and Dr. George Dangas, MD, MACC, MSCAI for selecting me for this highly competitive elective and providing an experience that has further strengthened my ambition to pursue a career in interventional cardiology. This opportunity was made possible through two awards that I am deeply honoured to have received: the Royal College of Physicians Medical Student Elective Prize and The Victoria Foundation Medical Student Elective Bursary. This elective would not have been possible without their support. I am looking forward to completing my next elective, before graduating from medical school at King's College London in July and beginning work as a doctor shortly after. #Cardiology #MedicalEducation #MountSinai #HeartFailure #CriticalCare #InterventionalCardiology
