When Art Mirrors Our Values Recently, I was asked to select a piece of art that moved me and reflect on what made it so impactful. I chose one of Claude Monet’s Gare Saint-Lazare paintings. I was struck by how art can resonate so deeply with our core values. This might not come as a surprise to those who know my passion for railways, my fascination with train stations, and the Musée d'Orsay—home to the Impressionist masters and formerly the Gare du Paris-Orléans. What truly surprised me was realizing how a painting that speaks to you can act as a mirror to your values. For me, this particular artwork reflects: - A desire to contribute to something greater than myself—to build a legacy that will have a lasting, positive impact for future generations. - A passion for solving complex problems and a love for science and engineering, which encompass our ability to analyze, understand, build, and innovate. - A deep curiosity and love for travel—trains are a direct invitation to explore. The painting seems to beckon us to board the train and discover what lies beyond the focal point, and what the future of transport might hold. I also appreciate how the painting celebrates life: human connection, hard work, the energy of collaboration, and the beauty of purposeful action. Reflecting on this and my current role, I’m grateful that Rio Tinto offers opportunities that echo these values and interests: the challenge of solving hard problems, a commitment to finding better ways to provide the materials we need to build the future, and core values that include curiosity, courage, and care. What about you? Do you have a favorite painting? How does it reflect your values?
