Birth trauma is an escalating public health issue in Australia, yet national policy has not kept pace. This under-acknowledged crisis impacts a strained maternity care system, carries societal and productivity costs, and leaves women and families to grapple with devastating psychological, physical, and social consequences. It's clear that Australia's response to birth trauma cannot wait any longer. In search of solutions, RANZCOG convened a national roundtable alongside Birth Trauma Australia, uniting clinicians, policymakers, sector leaders, and women with lived experience to discuss the way forward. Swipe through to read the set of recommendations that have been proposed. This roundtable, and its findings, is a major step in a much longer process of reform. RANZCOG will use the report’s findings to continue to press for urgent action – including improved postnatal care, reduced cost barriers, and recognition of long-term maternal impacts from childbirth.
