The June 24, 2026 Venezuela earthquake sequence is a valuable reminder that near-field seismic demand may be governed by an earthquake doublet, not just a single event. According to the USGS, a magnitude 7.2 foreshock was followed just 39 seconds later by a magnitude 7.5 mainshock. Both were shallow earthquakes . Several multi-storey building appear to have collapsed due to this massive EQ . From a structural and dam safety perspective, the engineering concern extends beyond peak ground motion. Sequential strong shaking can produce cumulative damage before a structure has an opportunity to redistribute stresses or dissipate energy. This devastating EQ was not alone , in quick succession, two powerful EQs shook California and Japan too . Video source Aljazeera
