This is so important and a lot of cultural institutions just don't seem to understand! As my late friend Prof. Armin Klein always pointed out: most people's (his estimate: 95%) motivation is that of marginal utility (Grenznutzenerwägung). The art comes second. And there is nothing wrong with it. "Kahr [the museums director] accepts that the art will be secondary for many visitors. “That might be perceived as sacrilegious in certain institutions….“If you’re a community art museum, your goal is to get people to come again and again and again and bring friends and see the museum as part of their core identity,” says Kahr. “To do that, you have to show them themselves, but also continuously expand their horizons about who they are.”"
