The Combat Support Ship (CSS) "Den Helder" was the stage of a memorable day at Damen Naval as Princess Amalia graced us with her first solo working visit to christen the ship. A royal duty rooted in tradition – its protocols rehearsed down to the minute. The amount of preparation that goes into a royal visit is staggering. What looks effortless: poise, grace, and an unhurried tour on board is, in reality, the result of meticulous planning. Over 80 journalists traveled to Vlissingen, their color-coded press cards, tightly regimented by the RVD (Royal House of the Netherlands), determining their coveted proximity to the Crown Princess. And yet, some moments refuse to be choreographed. The quiet power of "Freedom" played by the Marinierskapel der Koninklijke Marine as the Princess made her epic entrance. The thrill of standing just an arm’s length away as she visited the ship. The sheer joy of the day – all impossible to contain within protocol. For 150 years, Vlissingen and Zeeland have been at the heart of naval innovation. This tradition continues today as Damen Naval, Ministerie van Defensie, Materiel and IT Command, Dutch industry, and research institutes all work together to strengthen and modernise the Royal Netherlands Navy fleet.
