The modern music industry wasn't built by visionaries. It was built on stolen culture, exploitative contracts, and the deliberate targeting of the most vulnerable artists available. I wrote this piece for my Music Industry History course at Musicians Institute of Hollywood tracing the full arc from minstrel shows through the Great Depression - and how every single "innovation" of that era (phonograph, race records, radio, jukeboxes) made exploitation more efficient, not less.
