"Use quantum where quantum reigns supreme." That is how Helmut Katzgraber answered when our CCO Yuval Boger asked him where quantum actually delivers value first. Helmut spent years at Microsoft and then AWS studying which workloads suit quantum hardware. Now a general partner at 55North, he is clear about where he places his bets: materials, chemicals, and pharma, where you need quantum mechanical simulation of strongly correlated systems. Battery materials, organic LEDs, the metal-organic complexes in certain drugs. That is where classical compute struggles. On optimization he is the opposite of bullish. For the foreseeable future, he expects classical methods to keep outperforming quantum devices on those problems. He is also candid about timing. The machines, in his words, are still experiments, too early for industrial-scale application value. The work right now is identifying the use cases worth building around, then honing hardware in that direction. On modality he refuses to pick a favorite, and he does not think any one approach has a decisive edge over the others. His test is which one brings the most value for the specific problem you are trying to solve.
