🪨 $2B investment in aluminium and renewable energy Queensland is at the heart of Australia’s world-class aluminium supply chain. Every stage of production—from bauxite mining to alumina refining and aluminium smelting—takes place right here. As a key contributor to Australia’s position as the largest global producer of bauxite and a leader in alumina refining, Queensland is driving innovation, economic growth, and thousands of jobs. đźŹNow, in a landmark $2 billion partnership with Rio Tinto and the Australian Government , we’re securing the future of the Boyne Island aluminium smelter in Gladstone, while driving the transition to renewable energy.⚡🌞🌬️ The investment—$1 billion each from us and the feds—will enable the smelter to transition to renewable energy by 2040, ensuring its operations continue beyond the current power contract ending in 2029. Rio Tinto will also invest in energy and transmission infrastructure, unlocking an estimated $7.5 billion in upgrades to Queensland’s energy grid. This partnership delivers significant benefits: âś… Secures the long-term future of the Boyne smelter âś… Supports 3,000 jobs in central Queensland (1,000 direct, 2,000 indirect) âś… Strengthens Australia’s industrial resilience and competitiveness âś… Positions Boyne as one of the world’s first aluminium smelters underpinned by solar and wind power. This milestone demonstrates the power of collaboration between governments and industry to drive decarbonisation, safeguard local jobs, and build a sustainable future for Queensland’s economy. Shout out to Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development, who played a key role in negotiating and facilitating the partnership. #RenewableEnergy #Aluminium #RioTinto #BoyneSmelter #PublicPrivatePartnership #DeliveringForQueensland
