Thirty-five years teaching. Nineteen as a Guidance Officer. And still, no two days look the same.✨ Kate has spent nearly two decades guiding Queensland state school students through the ups and downs of school life, most recently at Balmoral State High School. ‘One moment you might be supporting a student with their wellbeing, the next you’re working with teachers to adjust learning or helping a family navigate supports,’ she said. ‘I enjoy that mix of counselling, education and problem-solving.’ The role itself has shifted dramatically over her career. ‘Years ago, the role was largely about testing students and helping guide career pathways. Today it’s much broader. We’re supporting students’ learning, wellbeing and mental health, and working closely with teachers and families.’ At the heart of it all is something quieter. 💛 ‘I really value being able to help young people understand themselves a bit better. Their strengths, their challenges, and what might help them succeed at school and beyond.’ And for parents walking alongside their kids through the teenage years, Kate has this to offer: ‘Listen carefully as your children grow into young adults, without rushing to fix everything. These years can be challenging, but they're also full of energy, humour and fun. A time to watch them discover who they are while knowing you're there to support them.’ Kate is one of 1,285 Guidance Officers (GOs) working across our state schools. These specialist teachers offer advice and counselling on everything from learning and behaviour to career pathways, mental health and wellbeing. 🌱 Go GOs! Thanks for everything you do. #GuidanceOfficerWeek
