Congratulations to QBI Emeritus Professor Perry Bartlett, recognised in The Courier Mail's Power List of Queensland’s leading scientists and CEOs. Emeritus Professor Bartlett was recognised for transforming neuroscience through his discovery that the adult brain contains stem cells capable of generating new neurons, overturning a long-held scientific belief. His research has opened new possibilities for treating dementia, depression, stroke and other neurodegenerative diseases. After discovering that inhibiting the EphA4 signalling pathway can help damaged nerve cells reconnect, Emeritus Professor Bartlett and Emeritus Professor Andrew Boyd developed a new therapy for motor neurone disease. Now, as CEO of UQ spin-out, NuNerve, Emeritus Professor Bartlett leads Phase II trials testing the drug’s effectiveness in slowing disease progression. As the Founding Director of UQ's Queensland Brain Institute, he also helped build one of Australia's premier neuroscience organisations, cementing Queensland's reputation as a global centre for brain research and innovation.
