When You Miss Something Important in a Client Proposal… What Should You Do? No matter how experienced you are, mistakes happen. You can spend hours preparing a proposal, only to realize later that you left out a critical detail. (For me recently, I forgot to include the PMS to use in setting up the hotel). The real test of professionalism isn’t whether you make mistakes—it’s how you respond when you discover them. Trying to quietly work around the omission may seem easier, but it can create bigger problems if the client discovers it later. Owning the mistake, on the other hand, demonstrates integrity, confidence, and respect for the client. A professional approach is to: • Acknowledge the oversight promptly. • Take responsibility without making excuses. • Present the corrected information clearly. • Explain any impact (if any) and provide the best solution. • Reassure the client of your commitment to delivering quality. Clients don’t expect perfection every time. They value honesty, accountability, and a partner who can identify issues and resolve them proactively. In project management and HR consulting, credibility is built one decision at a time. Sometimes, the most professional thing you can say is: “I noticed an important omission in the proposal. I’d like to correct it to ensure you have all the information needed to make the best decision.” People may forget the mistake, but they’ll remember how professionally you handled it.
