How can European higher education remain globally competitive while preparing students for a rapidly changing future?   From AI and skills development to innovation and international collaboration, this question shaped conversations throughout Day 1 of the QS Higher Ed Summit: Europe 2026 in Budapest, hosted by Széchenyi István Egyetem.   Setting the tone for the summit, Andrew Plant, QS Executive Director – Europe, observed:   "European higher education is being asked to work harder, become better and grow stronger."   As Andrew highlighted, "the needs of students have changed rapidly." Coupled with shifting workforce demands and the growing impact of AI on how we learn and work, higher education institutions are being challenged to demonstrate clear value while adapting at pace.   Throughout the day, discussions reinforced the need for universities to remain agile, embrace innovation, and equip graduates with the skills, capabilities, and mindsets required to succeed in an increasingly complex world.   Some of the key themes that emerged included:   🎓 Talent & skills for the future Preparing graduates with the skills, adaptability, and lifelong learning mindset needed to thrive in an evolving workforce.   🤖 Responsible AI & human capability Moving beyond AI literacy to focus on judgement, trust, institutional readiness, and the human skills that remain essential in an AI-enabled world.   🚀 Innovation, impact & competitiveness Strengthening Europe's ability to translate research, entrepreneurship, and knowledge into meaningful societal and economic impact.   🌍 Collaboration & global recognition Leveraging international partnerships and ensuring institutional excellence is recognised on the global stage.   🔄 Agility in a changing world Responding to technological disruption, demographic shifts, and changing student expectations with greater speed and adaptability.   A thought-provoking first day, with more conversations to come as the summit continues tomorrow. #QSHigherEdSummit #HigherEducation #AI
