Four First Nations women from DLGWV attended the First Nations Women Unlimited Leadership Summit in Brisbane last month for a powerful and culturally safe gathering that honours the knowledge, journeys and contributions of First Nations women across every sector. The two-day conference paid respect to the generations of women who have paved the way while uplifting the next wave of young women and trailblazers shaping their own leadership futures through storytelling, culture and deep connection. Madeleine from our Water team said one of the biggest takeaways for her was learning the concept of lateral leadership and how strongly it’s reflected in First Nations cultures, particularly by women. “Rather than focusing only on hierarchy or titles, it highlights the value of leading through relationships, community and shared responsibility.” Our staff are our greatest asset, and by empowering them to listen, learn, and grow, we’re building a stronger, brighter future for our department and the communities we serve.
