As part of #LondonClimateActionWeek, Pure DC's Director of Energy & Utilities, Vince Colby, joined industry and academic leaders Yihong Zhou, Frederik Drewes and Ethan Tiao for a panel discussion, chaired by Thomas Morstyn, to discuss how AI data centres can become active participants in the future energy system. Drawing on research published in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) *Energy Sustainability Magazine*, the discussion highlighted several key themes: - Grid connection is one of the biggest barriers to scaling AI infrastructure, with greater flexibility offering the potential to unlock capacity faster. - Data centres can become active grid assets, supporting renewable energy integration, improving system resilience and reducing network constraints. - Flexible connection agreements and advances in AI workload management could accelerate connections while creating value for both operators and electricity networks. The future challenge isn't simply how we power AI infrastructure, but how data centres, network operators, renewable generators and policymakers work together to create a more resilient, flexible and lower-carbon energy system.
