Your system’s defenses may boot successfully, but the compromise could have begun several steps earlier. By the time the operating system starts, a malicious implant in the software and underlying firmware may already have been accepted as legitimate and passed forward through the chain of trust. Reinstalling the OS does not remove the threat because the compromise persists below the operating-system layer. Therefore, trust must begin beneath mutable software and firmware, in protected silicon designed to resist unauthorized modification. Caliptra provides an open-source foundation for this hardware anchor, defining the functions and architecture of an integrated silicon root of trust.
