📢 Public service media (PSM) should be recognised, funded and protected as a vital component of society’s critical infrastructure, says a new report commissioned by the Global Task Force for public media (GTF). The study, published today and authored by Professors Gillian Doyle and Raymond Boyle of the University of Glasgow, draws on evidence from 11 public media organisations across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania. Some key takeaways: 1️⃣ Public service media can be regarded as critical infrastructure as they underpin democratic resilience, information integrity, social cohesion, and disaster preparedness. 2️⃣ The critical infrastructural role of PSM is gaining prominence and becoming increasingly recognised. 3️⃣ It acknowledges that PSM are being asked to shoulder more responsibilities, which have their own implications for the funding, governance and independence of PSM, while also navigating technological pressures and financial constraints.
