Happy to share our new research just published on ventricle-specific cardiac physiology by Sanne Langmuur supervised by Yannick Taverne. Our latest study explored how the right ventricle (RV) and left ventricle (LV) respond differently to commonly used inotropic and vasoactive drugs using human living myocardial slices (LMS). Key findings: 🔹 RV myocardial slices demonstrated: • Higher contractile force • Faster contraction and relaxation kinetics • Greater contraction velocity compared to LV tissue 🔹 Dobutamine produced a significantly stronger response in the RV versus the LV. 🔹 Adrenergic stimulation (adrenaline, noradrenaline, dobutamine) frequently induced spontaneous irregular contractions — particularly in RV tissue. Why does this matter? The RV is often treated as the “forgotten ventricle,” yet these findings reinforce that RV physiology is fundamentally different from LV physiology. Current pharmacologic strategies are still largely LV-driven, but our data suggest ventricle-specific therapeutic approaches may be necessary, especially in acute heart failure and cardiogenic shock settings.
