BACH - A NEVER ENDING STORY! Heute ist der 275. Todestag von Johann Sebastian Bach. Und ich bin ziemlich demütig - weil mir gestern, bei einer unglaublich bewegenden Aufführung der Matthäus-Passion durch das Bachfest Malaysia hier im fernen Kuala Lumpur, nochmal im besonderen vor Ohren geführt wurde, dass seine Musik auch noch drei Jahrhunderte nach seinem Tod sich über größte zeitliche, geographische und kulturelle Grenzen hinweg noch als ganz neu mitteilt. In diesem Zusammenhang erlaube ich mir, nachträglich meine kleine Eröffnungsrede zum diesjährigen Leipziger Bachfest hier zu posten - in der ich einmal mehr staune: über die Beständigkeit von Bachs Musik und darüber, wie viele Wege (immer noch) zu ihr führen. Today marks the 275th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's death. And I feel quite humbled – because yesterday, during an incredibly moving performance of the St Matthew Passion by the Bach Festival Malaysia here in Kuala Lumpur, I was once again reminded that even three centuries after his death, his music still resonates as if it were brand new, transcending the greatest temporal, geographical and cultural boundaries. In this context, I would like to take the liberty of posting my short opening speech for this year's Leipzig Bach Festival here – in which I once again marvel at the enduring nature of Bach's music and the many paths that lead (still) to it.
