After Spain reached the World Cup final, I waited for Luis de la Fuente’s interview. (Coach) I expected him to talk about tactics. He didn’t. Instead, he spoke about an idea and values that built this team: 1. Commitment – every player is all in. 2. Solidarity – talent is expected to serve the team. 3. Sacrifice – success comes from effort long before the big stage. 4. Staying true to the process – they didn’t change who they were because the World Cup got bigger. And then came my favourite moment. After reaching a World Cup final stages , some of the players who hadn’t even played stayed back to train. That was the example he chose. Not the goals. Not the penalty. Not the clean sheet. The substitutes. Finally, he said something that summed up the evening: “France are one of the best teams in the world. But they came up against the best team.” The difference between a collection of great players and a great team isn’t talent.
