Lessons from the Vermicompost Man of India, Dr Sultan Ahmed Ismail Some learning experiences are remembered not for the answers they provide, but for the curiosity they ignite. Senior secondary students from CPS GLOBAL SCHOOL recently had the privilege of interacting with Dr. Sultan Ismail, affectionately known as The Vermicompost Man of India. What began as a student interview soon evolved into a rich and engaging conversation that extended far beyond the boundaries of a conventional question-and-answer session. Drawing upon more than five decades of pioneering work in earthworm ecology and sustainable agriculture, Dr. Ismail encouraged the students to think critically, question assumptions, and view environmental challenges through a scientific lens. His warmth and humility created an atmosphere where curiosity flourished naturally. One of the most thought-provoking discussions centred on the responsible use of plastic. Rather than advocating its complete elimination, he emphasised the importance of mindful and responsible usage—a perspective that challenged common narratives and prompted deeper reflection. The students also explored the science of vermicomposting and its remarkable role in transforming organic waste into nutrient-rich compost, improving soil health, supporting sustainable agriculture, and reducing dependence on chemical fertilisers. Beyond environmental science, Dr. Ismail shared insights from his remarkable research journey, his work on an anti-inflammatory drug patent, and the inspiration behind his published books. More importantly, he encouraged the students to embrace originality, nurture a spirit of inquiry, and pursue their passions with purpose and perseverance. The interaction offered far more than scientific knowledge. It reinforced that authentic learning is born through meaningful conversations with individuals whose lives exemplify curiosity, innovation, and service. Students expressed their gratitude to the Head of our SchoolMrs Rama Mylavarapu as experiences such as these inspire them to become thoughtful researchers, responsible environmental stewards, and lifelong learners. #StudentLearning #EnvironmentalEducation #Sustainability #Vermicomposting #Research #STEMEducation #Curiosity #LifelongLearning #Leadership #CPSGlobalSchool
