Details of Moretto da Brescia’s (born Alessandro Bonvicino) training are somewhat obscure. While his works showcase many influences, most prominent are features similar to those found in the works of Venetian masters such as Giobanni Bellini, Palma Vecchio, and Titan. Some believe he may have even apprenticed with Titan, though that has never been substantiated; certainly, he studied the works of these masters. Though he is most well known for his commissioned work for churches — many near his birthplace of Brescia as well as others in Verona, Milan, Bergamo, and Asola — he also gained significant renown as a portraitist, including Portrait of a Man which is thought to be the earliest full-length Italian independent portrait. His work earned him the nickname “the Raphael of Brescia” as the paintings are characterized by graceful figures, beautifully draping fabrics, and powerful use of color all of which can be seen in his masterpiece the Assumption of the Madonna, painted for the church of San Clemente. Moretto da Brescia was a pious man and spent time in prayer before painting any sacred subject like the Madonna seen here. #maestromondays #northernitaly #renaissanceartists #art #arthistory #italianrenaissance #italy #discoveritaly #privateitalytours
