The Pantanal, the world's largest wetland, is burning as we speak. Once a vibrant ecosystem, this crucial biome is now under attack from rampant fires driven by illegal burnings and expanding agribusiness. In 2024 alone, over 661,000 hectares have already been consumed by flames. These fires devastate not only the rich biodiversity but also the lives of Indigenous communities and traditional peoples who call the Pantanal home. With prolonged droughts, the situation worsens, threatening the entire region's future. A special thanks to João Paulo Soares Silva for creating a detailed article on the current environmental crisis in the Pantanal Biome and the importance this ecosystem has to the region. We must act now to protect this irreplaceable treasure. #EnvironmentalCrisis #ClimateAction #IndigenousVoices #ProtectOurPlanet International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), National Geographic Society, Climate Heritage Network.
