After consulting a good number of startups in the Cloud & DevOps space, here are some of my learnings: • 𝗞𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 & 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺. (Most of the) Times a bare metal server will solve the problem. • 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆(tracing, profiling, monitoring, logging, carbon footprint tracking). A simple solution like Cilium is enough, there is no need for 10 different tools. • 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. • 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲, cloud vendors these days provide more elasticity and agility than we will ever need. • 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 & 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. For example, side-car service mesh was under so much hype back then but now I can see orgs are either moving out of it or using side-car-less service mesh. • 𝗙𝗮𝗮𝗦(𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲) 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱. • Unless you are a Global company, I don’t think there is any need for even opting for Cloud Platforms(unless you can accept some minutes of downtime). #cloud #devops
