"Our cities are overheating like a female body, with symptoms of menopause." This is how artist Lene Markusen describes the starting point for her work in FIRE: From the Cosmos to the Commons, the public art exhibition curated by Joanna Warsza at the St. Nikolai Memorial. Lene Markusen revisits the overlooked sculptures of Barbara Haeger, asking what happens when public artworks outlive the spaces they were created for. One sculpture, originally designed as a fountain in 1954, lost the water that was central to its meaning. Today, standing exposed in rising temperatures, it's a different kind of monument that speaks to climate, public space, and the changing conditions of city life.
