Data Engineering in Daily Life Ever noticed this on Google Maps? Sometimes it suggests a longer route even when a shorter one clearly exists. Not traffic. Not roadblock. Just… longer. Feels dumb, right? But here’s the twist: Shortest route ≠ fastest route ≠ most reliable route. Sometimes the system avoids: • Roads with unpredictable traffic • Signals that fluctuate a lot • Areas with poor data confidence So it picks a route that’s more predictable, not shorter. Because being consistently 25 mins is better than 20 mins… or 45 mins… depending on luck. In other words: The system isn’t optimizing for distance.
