Genetic testing reform is here. But for advisers, the bigger question may be: who in your client book needs to hear this? For years, some clients may have avoided genetic or medical testing because they were concerned about the impact on their ability to access life insurance. That means some clients’ cover, sum insured or broader financial plan may have been shaped without a full understanding of their health risk. Marcello Bertasso explores why this matters for advisers, particularly when reviewing clients with: • family history flags, including cancer syndromes, cardiac conditions or lipid disorders • deferred medical investigations, where insurance anxiety may have played a role • older cover that may have been set without full visibility of their risk profile • upcoming cover reviews, where the sequencing of testing, disclosure and cover decisions may now look different This is not just an insurance issue. It is also a health information issue. Now may be the time to revisit the conversation with clients who may have stayed in the dark because the insurance stakes felt too high.
