Part 1 (of 3): Introduction and background The Power Systems and Market Research Group (PSMR) has been created by begin of 2020 and is hosted by the Electrical Power Engineering Unit of UMONS. In the recent past, even if not yet formally created, the Research Group led research activities in the framework of the ORES chair (with the goal of creating a competence center in the field of Smart Grids in Mons) with, as a result, the PhD theses of Dr Vasiliki Klonari (on the overvoltage risk assessment in Low Voltage distribution systems) and Dr Bashir Bakhshideh Zad, PhD (on the robust voltage control in Medium Voltage distribution systems). The Research Group was also involved in the Walloon Region funded projects GREDOR (PhD thesis of Dr Lazaros Exizidis, Ph.D. on information sharing and incentive-compatibility in electricity markets) and SMARTWATER (PhD thesis of Dr Jean-François Toubeau on data processing and decision-making for an optimized valorization of underground pumped hydro stations in reserve & energy electricity markets). Other research work dedicated to Game Theory applied to connected microgrids (PhD Thesis of Dr Charline Stevanoni) and to the role of storage in local markets (PhD Thesis of Dr Dimitrios Thomas, Ph.D) were also partly supported by members of the PSMR.
