Gouache study on cardboard for the famous 'White Rider,' 1946, Walt Kuhn (1877-1949). Private collection. Kuhn was an American painter and a principal organizer of the famous Armory Show of 1913 —America's first introduction to European Impressionists and Modernism. Near the end of his extensive career, Kuhn would attend the Ringling Bros. circus every evening to capture the performers backstage. Behind the faces of Kuhn’s performers lies a haunting reminder of life’s inescapable hardships. His models are portrayed in personalities far different from the joyful characters they are paid to play in public. They are detached from their performance stages, placed outside of their normal environment and connect to the viewer on a more symbolic and psychological level. #potterdayart #modernart #fineart #art #waltkuhn Sotheby's
