Plenty of interesting and challenging conversations at the Ports Australia Engineering and Asset Management Committee Meeting held in Adelaide last week, and attended by Ports Victoria’s Asset Program and Systems Advisor, Scott Black. One of the topics that caught Scott’s eye, related to the use of Berthing Velocity for ships and Fender capacity as currently outlined in the Standard and Guidelines and a debate over whether an approach developed in the 1960’s for a river environment, was relevant to ports in 2026. There was also a thought-provoking presentation by a Port Authority on lessons to be learned after a company went into liquidation and left behind assets that had to be cleaned up by the port a great cost, leading to a review of their tenancy arrangements. And to top it all off, a visit to Port Adelaide’s hard to miss, pink lighthouse! “It was great to catch to catch up with industry colleagues and I’m looking forward to the ongoing conversations with the team at Ports Victoria about how we can take these insights forward,” said Scott. “And a shout out to my colleagues Doug McGuinness and Muhammad Sabea who also attended remotely.”
