When the Porsche 935/78 "Moby Dick" appeared for the first time in public at the Six-Hour Race at Silverstone in the spring of 1978, it looked familiar and unusual at the same time. His roof line resembles the 911, but the proportions shift underneath. The body stretches out, and the "Moby Dick" gets its nickname from its appearance. This form follows an aerodynamic logic: The goal is not only to reduce air resistance, but also to distribute downforce properly at very high speeds. The steel body of the 911, with an aluminum frame in the front and back, forms the technical backbone; the plastic body consists essentially of the front and rear fenders as well as the trunk and rear deck. The roof with A-pillar and the side sills correspond to the original 911 chassis. With a weight of 1,025 kilograms, the "Moby Dick" remains exceptionally light for a vehicle of its size. This approach is also evident in the engine: the 3.2-liter six-cylinder boxer engine combines air-cooled cylinders with water-cooled four-valve cylinder heads. This solution arose from the increasing thermal requirements in racing. Two turbochargers replace the large-volume single aggregates used until then and improve the engine's response time. The cylinder heads are welded to the cylinders, increasing thermal stability and rigidity. Up to 845 PS (621 kW) is available for sprint and World Championship races, transferred through a new four-speed gearbox to the rear axle.
