Who thinks of car tires, toothpaste, or laundry detergent when they think of rice? 🍚 Yet around 800 million tons of paddy rice (raw rice) are harvested worldwide every year, generating enormous quantities of rice hulls. Many rice producers and biomass power plant operators already use this byproduct for sustainable energy generation. A good first step, but the potential goes even further. When rice hulls are burned, they produce rice hull ash (RHA), a raw material with an exceptionally high silica content that occurs naturally. This ash can be processed into high quality bio based silicates, which are used in products such as tires, detergents, paints, coatings, and consumer goods. 🌾 This creates an additional value generation opportunity for rice producers and power plant operators: ➡️ An agricultural byproduct becomes an industrial raw material ➡️ Existing resources are utilized even more efficiently ➡️ The circular economy becomes economically attractive The Pörner Research Center supports companies in analyzing and evaluating their rice hull ash and helps identify the potential of their specific raw materials. To coincide with our presence at Agritechnica Asia in Bangkok, we have also comprehensively revised our Bio Silicates brochure. It clearly illustrates how high quality silicates can be produced from rice hull ash, the wide range of applications they enable, and the environmental and economic benefits of this approach.
